How TRVL intends to stay the highest rated magazine on iPad.

Why a new identity for iPad's most popular magazine is necessary.

24 AUGUST 2011, AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
Summary
With a 5 star rating, TRVL is the highest customer rated magazine on iPad. Its readers are unanimously positive and loyal to the brand. TRVL has readers in 170 of the 193 official countries in the world, and its download numbers compete with the best performing magazines on iPad. Yet its founders, Michel Elings and Jochem Wijnands, decided that a new identity for TRVL was absolutely necessary. Why? Because they are keen to stay the highest rated magazine on iPad.

TRVL was the first iPad exclusive magazine in the world. It was first made out of a spare bedroom by its founders, Michel Elings and Jochem Wijnands. Now it has readers in 170 of the 193 official countries in the world, and its download numbers compete with the best performing magazines on tablet. Its readers are extremely satisfied and award TRVL with an average of 4,82 stars out of 5 - making it the highest customer rated magazine on iPad.

As featured in The New York Times: "To read a TRVL article on the iPad is to be transported to that destination, with excellent photography and evocative storytelling."

Yet, TRVL has hired acclaimed art director Rob van Bracht, to create a new identity from cover to back. Why?

Michel Elings: "Our content is outstanding. We have National Geographic photographers and Lonely Planet writers working for us. But our design didn't match our content. Our readers didn't seem to mind, so far, but they might in the future. We want to beat them to it. We mind!"

Michel: "We are adding new functionality, too. Best example is the new geo positioning, that TRVL will offer with each photo. In a very sophisticated way it shows you the satellite view of where a photo was taken. And we added new integrated tools for (social) sharing. Not yet as good as we would like it to be, but it shows the direction we are going in. Sharing, dialogue, platform."

What is new in TRVL 2.0?

  • New design for all our 25 issues
  • New ultra cool photo geo location
  • New icon
  • New menu icons
  • Optimized navigation
  • New integrated social media and share functions
So why the new identity and functionality?
Michel: "Simply put: because we are keen to stay the highest rated magazine on iPad."

"TRVL’s redesign really is gorgeous. The Dutch startup has gone back to the drawing board, completely revising all their existing content to fit the new look, too.
